S.& P. 500 profits now stand at 8.6 percent of gross domestic product, a high-water mark in Commerce Department data reaching back to 1947. And analysts predict that the median S.& P. 500 company will enjoy 12.8 percent profit growth this year and 12.9 percent in 2007, according to Zacks.
